SIDNEY DAVID MARKMAN
(Extinction, Fossilization, and Transformation of the “Pueblos de Indios” of the Kingdom of Guatemala)
Mesoamérica 14 (diciembre de 1987), págs. 407–427.

Abstract
The urbanization of the native population fell more to the missionaries than to the civil authorities. Nevertheless, many of these towns were abandoned in the seventeenth century, according to Markman’s research, for a series of reasons which the author enumerates. Among these the author mentions the effects caused by the transfer of established indigenous towns to new locations, and the decline in the indigenous population during the eighteenth century which particularly affected the towns along the Pacific coast. Markman also analyzes the stagnation which occurred in the physical development of some native towns and the factors which influenced the transformation of Indian towns to Mestizo (mixed descent) towns.

(An Analysis of the Sculptures from Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa)
Mesoamérica 14 (diciembre de 1987), págs. 467–509.

Abstract
This author’s analysis represents the first attempt to classify the sculptures of Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa in a meaningful order. The author includes a detailed classification of the sculptures and monuments, complemented by 22 photographs.

STEPHEN WEBRE
(Militia Companies and the Defense of Central America in the Seventeenth Century: A Document Recording the 1673 Enlistment)
Mesoamérica 14 (diciembre de 1987), págs. 511–529.

Abstract
Using as his point of departure the fact that Central America occupied a strategic position during the colonial period due to its proximity to the routes by which products from New Spain and Peru were sent to the mother country, Webre examines the composition of the militias, recruitment, the scarcity of arms in some areas and their abundance in others. He concludes with a short account of the draft levied in 1673, two years after Henry Morgan’s assault on Panama City.

VÍCTOR MANUEL ESPONDA JIMENO
Toponimia tzeltal de Cancuc, Chiapas
(Tzeltal Toponymy from Cancuc, Chiapas)
Mesoamérica 14 (diciembre de 1987), págs. 531–534.

Abstract
The author presents a project in which he proposes to study the toponymy of the regions or households which make up the community of San Juan Cancuc in the municipality of Ocosingo, Chiapas. He bases his project on the theory that a great deal of information about the general culture and environment of the inhabitants of a particular place may be unearthed through the morphological and linguistic analysis of vernacular names. He also affirms that in the course of his toponymical study he will assign only the most usual meaning given by the natives to the words studied.

DANIEL SCHÁVELZON y VÍCTOR RIVERA GRIJALBA
La destrucción de Kaminaljuyú
(The Loss of Kaminaljuyú)
Mesoamérica 14 (diciembre de 1987), págs. 535–551.

Abstract
An analysis of the gradual destruction of Kaminaljuyú, site where one of the first complex societies of Mesoamerica developed. This destruction was due principally to the proximity of the site to Guatemala, the capital, and was accelerated after 1945 by the growth of the city, the widening and paving of the highway to Antigua, and later, by the rapid and indiscriminate urbanization of the zone. The authors cite an interesting paradox; that simultaneously with the destruction of the site, protective legislation was being developed which, nevertheless, lacked any means of enforcement. An example of this legislation may be seen in the modest preservation measures achieved by the Institute of Anthropology and History.
