Resumen
Estudio
Abstract
This is
a study of the socioeconomic structure of Costa Rica before the advent of the coffee
industry. The author focuses on three aspects of Costa Rican society, analyzing the
internal features of each: occupational differentiation, distribution of wealth, and
the landowning elite. Gudmundson discusses several important characteristics of this
period, including the key position of dominance in society occupied by the merchant
class, the concentration of wealth within a small percentage of the population, and
the fact that the possession of land did not in itself constitute the foundation of
the power held by the elite.

Resumen
Examina
Abstract
This
paper examines the history of modern entrepreneurship in Guatemala, its origins,
development, economic motivations and relations with the centers of power, from the
second half of the nineteenth century through the government of Jorge Ubico.
Cambranes focuses his attention on foreign agricultural entrepreneurs involved in
coffee production and on the figure of the coffee grower. Entrepreneurs and coffee
growers (at times represented by the same person) established the coffee industry in
Guatemala and occupied a dominant position in the social, economic, and political
life of that country.

Abstract
This
study, based on recognition and analysis of archaeological remains from the Petapa
area, focuses on demography and prehispanic settlement patterns in the region. From
his investigations, Murdy concludes that an agricultural economy existed from the
latter part of the Early Formative period on and that the demographic history of the
zone was intimately related to its agriculture. Accordingly, political and
demographic processes and the corresponding intensification of agriculture apparently
resulted, at the end of the Late Classic, in the exceeding of the productive capacity
of the agricultural system. On the other hand, it appears that settlement patterns in
each period depended on the sociopolitical organization of the specific zone, and
more generally of the region (the Valley of Guatemala).

Abstract
This
article describes the changes which took place in family structure among the Poqomam
of San Miguel Petapa during the first years of the Spanish colony. Whereas during the
period immediately preceding the Conquest the social structure was based on family
(extended family in the high social strata), clans and lineages, in the years
following the arrival of the Spanish the nuclear family took precedence, a change
which weakened and eventually caused the disappearance of the clans and lineages. In
the tax records of 1562 there is no evidence of extended families, a fact which well
demonstrates the success achieved by Spanish policies.

Epidemias del siglo XIX en Honduras
(Nineteenth-Century Epidemics in
Honduras)
Mesoamérica 10 (diciembre de 1985), págs. 371–390.
Abstract
This
article is an investigation of the epidemic diseases which devastated Honduras during
the nineteenth century. The author discusses smallpox ans cholera and the measures
taken by the government to control these diseases. Smallpox appeared in the years
following the Independence movement, and assumed epidemic proportions. The disease
continued to affect the population into the 1830s, especially in the towns around
Tegucigalpa. At the same time cholera was rampant and continued to spread without
abating even as late as the 1850s. The development of these diseases came at a time
of political, social, and economic instability in Honduras, which made fighting and
controlling them difficult. This situation impeded the effective combating and
eventual control of the epidemics.

(Water-borne Diseases and the Classic Maya
Collapse)
Mesoamérica 10 (diciembre de 1985), págs. 391–410.
Abstract
Pozo-Ledezma offers an explanation of the collapse of the Mayan culture based
on the hypothesis that the decadence and later abandonment of Mayan population
centers of the Classic period was due in part to the harmful effects of concentrated
population growth on water quality and general hygienic conditions. After enumerating
the various theories about the collapse, the author reviews the factors which support
his own hypothesis: population density, contamination of water sources, water
scarcity, and the deterioration of the people’s immune systems (with respect to
water-transmitted diseases) played a large part in hastening the demise of the Mayan
civilization of the Classic period. In support of his theory, Pozo-Ledezma compares
the Classic Mayan situation with present-day sanitary conditions and the incidence of
intestinal diseases among the population of Petén.

Abstract
This is
a collection of four folk-tales taken from the oral tradition of Jacaltenango,
Huehuetenango. The author has transcribed these stories in an attempt to keep them,
and their cultural value, from being lost. The folk-tales embody the intimate
relationship between man and nature which is an intrinsic part of life for the
inhabitants of Jacaltenango.

Observaciones sobre canteras en Petén, Guatemala
(Notes on the Stone
Quarries of Petén, Guatemala)
Mesoamérica 10 (diciembre de 1985), págs. 421–449.
Dedica especial atención a
exhaustivo.
Abstract
In this
project, the author intends to investigate the methods which the Petén Mayas
used to work the quarries as a means of determining the level of technological
advancement they had attained. She directs her attention to the quarries located
around Tikal and Uaxactún, where she plans to investigate the more recently
cut surfaces. Based on similar studies which have been carried out at other
archaeological sites (Cobá, Calakmul, Mitla) and on her fieldwork, the author
makes some preliminary observations about the cutting and transporting of stone. She
devotes special attention to the tools used and suggests that there may be certain
similarities between prehispanic and present-day tools and that they probably differ
more in technique than in function. As is the case with modern tools, their
prehispanic equivalents were not limited to quarry work but had a wide range of uses.
These observations will need to be verified through an exhaustive study of the
subject.

Copán: una nueva visión del mundo maya
(Copán: A New
Vision of the Maya World)
Mesoamérica 10 (diciembre de 1985), págs. 451–458.
Abstract
Through
the research it supports, the Copán Archaeological Project strives to present
a new view of the Maya world as seen through works relating to art, epigraphy,
excavations and archaeological mapping of the valley around Copán. Thanks to
this project it has been possible to correctly interpret the dynastic sequence of the
city and to establish that it was not a ceremonial center but rather an urban
population center. In addition, research has been carried out which, it is hoped,
will provide information about the demographic growth and collapse of the city. The
second part of the project will emphasize the structure of Mayan society, its social
organization, and the causes which precipitated the decline of

Abstract
This
article consists of a description of three archaeological pieces which were taken
from Guatemala and which presumably are to be found in the United States, France, and
Germany. The purpose of the article is to achieve the repatriation of these pieces,
all three of which have been fully identified. One of the pieces is a fragment of
stele No. 25 from Piedras Negras which was auctioned at a precolumbian art sale in
Paris. Another is a fragment of stele No. 35, from the same site; it is presently in
the Rautenstrauch-Jaest Museum in Cologne. The third consists of two fragments of
stele No. 8 of Dos Pilas and currently forms part of the Wray collection, in Arizona.
Though Guatemala has made efforts to recuperate these archaeological pieces as part
of its cultural heritage, at the time this article was written there had been no
results as yet.

Abstract
This is
a translation of parts of an article published in volume 11 of the German newspaper
Trickster, published in 1983 in Munich. It is about the
hydroelectric dam project proposed by the Mexican government which, if realized,
would flood extensive areas at the shores of the Usumacinta river on the border
between Chiapas and Guatemala. It would cover parts or all of numerous archaeological
sites, among others Ceibal, Altar de Sacrificios, Piedras Negras, and
Yaxchilán.
