Abstract In this third part of his study on the social reality of the diocese of Guatemala, the author gives a critical assessment of Pedro Corts y Larraz, bishop of Guatemala who, over his ten years in office, was immensely active. Corts y Larraz distinguished himself by visiting all the parishes in his diocese, making notes and describing what he encountered on his travels, from geographic, social and religious viewpoints, and for having issued reform decrees. His writings are first rate source material for the historical study of Guatemala around the end of the eighteenth century.

Abstract This article looks at the competition between England and the United States for control of the region of the future canal, highlighting the diplomatic skill of the North Americans whoby virtue of the Clayton-Bulwer Treatyensured that no other power could establish control over the future canal zone. It also shows U. S. interest in using Russia to their own end, taking advantage of the fact that government circles of this Asiatic country were also interested in the construction of an interoceanic canal, because the establishment of a new route would promote the development of Russia’s commercial relations with the west coast of North America and China.

Abstract In the 1970s, the plantation workers on the fincas in the southern coast faced serious problems with health care. Among the major causes shown by the author were the limited coverage provided by the Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social (Guatemalan Social Security Institute), the type of medical practice in the countryside, the quality of which changed according to the patient’s social rank, the custom of merely consulting the owner of the pharmacy, and the family planning under the auspices of the Asociacin Pro Bienestar de la Familia (APROFAM). The conclusion is that the shortcomings in the farm workers health system in the region studied was intimately related to income levels, nutrition, and the housing conditions, among others.

Abstract The author seeks to document that, despite the obstacles to growth (e.g. natural disasters and epidemics), Central America’s population almost doubled in size during the first fifty years after Independence. He bases his analysis on the study of population estimates in Central America, on the annual growth rate estimate for Central America, on an estimate of its population density, and on data of contemporary cases. According to Woodward, the low population growth indices, no doubt, reflect the high indigenous population and generally low level of medical services available to them.

Abstract The analysis of the demographic evolution of these two regions stretches from the prehispanic time to the seventeenth century and was carried out during the excavations at the end of the 1970s at the archaeological site of the Chixoy Valley before its inhabitants were displaced and the area flooded by the dam. The French Mission’s studies and the population census ordered by the Crown permit the author to deduce the demographic importance with relative precision.

Abstract Focusing on coffee cultivation, the author attempts to show the historical connection between great and small landownership, latifundio and minifundio, when it appeared, the causes leading to it, and its influence on the subsequent development of Guatemala’s agriculture and the socioeconomic system prevailing today. His goal is to analyze the socioeconomic background of the agricultural work process in order to increase the knowledge of Guatemala’s agrarian reality.
